Elizabeth Gillespie from Southern Health will be presenting her research to date at this years congress of the benefits of steam towards controlling infection.

“In 2011 we began a project reviewing cleaning methodologies for managing patients with VRE. We stumbled across the developing evidence for using microfibre cloth and steam sanitation in clinical environments. A literature review identified the advantages of both technologies. We trialled both cleaning methods within aged care and acute care settings. We utilised our standard for fluorescent markers, incorporating it as a teaching tool and monitoring system. Using both microbiological sampling and ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate; Clean Trace) to monitor bioburden before and after room cleaning, we tested rooms where patients with confirmed C difficile and diarrhoea had been accommodated. Using new generation agar plates we confirmed the growth of C difficile from the patient stool samples. The technologies tested have significant advantages including reducing our environmental footprint, reducing OH&S risks, better cleaning outcomes and considerable time savings. These will be detailed during the presentation.”
